“PRE-EMERGENT”

Colossians 3:5-10, NLT

5 So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

6 Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming. 7 You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world.

8 But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language.

9 Don’t lie to each other, for you have  stripped off your old sinful nature and all its
wicked deeds.

10 Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.

  I. Pre-emergent naturally refers to certain herbicides (fertilizer) that is sown in the early spring.

A. They are applied in advance of the summer. Typically, in the early spring when temperatures range from 50 to 60 degrees.
1. The herbicide works to kill off unwanted weeds before they take root and spring up.

2. It is the period when your lawn is coming out of a long period of dormancy.

3. Weeds underneath the surface look to appear with your lawn robbing it of the nutrients and oxygen needed for health and growth.

II. Pre-emergent spiritually refers to sowing prayer as the herbicide (fertilizer) in your life.

A. The Word of God is the seed sown. Prayer is the fertilizer that kills the weeds and provides for healthy growth for the seed.

1. Rather you are coming out of a dormant season or not, examine your life, family, career, ministry…

2. Sow a life of prayer faithfully to kill off any thoughts of evil before they have the potential to take root.

3. Cut the source off early with your pre-emergent so you can enjoy God’s harvest and spiritual growth down the road.
